Japanese Bobtail - cat breed

Japanese bobtail is an indigenous breed of domestic cats with a small tail. They have been known at home for several centuries, reflected in art and folklore, appreciated for their amazing grace, beauty and cleanliness. The Japanese are convinced that these short-tailed creatures bring luck, wealth and prosperity to the house.

Origin history

Japanese bobtail can rightly be called one of the oldest cat breeds. Their images are found in paintings of the 17-18th century, but it is believed that they exist much longer. Most likely these cats with short tails appeared as a result of an accidental mutation.

Nothing is known about the origin of the breed, in addition, in 1602, the Japanese emperor signed a decree that drove all cats off the leashes and made them free. Now they had to fight rodents that threatened silk worms. Buying and selling cats has long been banned, but natural selection and uncontrolled selection have a positive effect on their health and genetics.

In the country's culture, short-tailed cats have always occupied a place of honor, especially individuals with a color of "mi-ke", which means "tricolor", were especially valued. But these were not “turtles”, the main color should be white, small spots of black and red should be located on the head, body and tail.

In 1968, the American breeder Elizabeth Freret brought three kittens with short ponytails from Japan. A year later, a standard was developed for them and a new breed called "Japanese Bobtail" was registered at CFA.

General characteristics

Japanese bobtails are cats with perfect natural proportions, not spoiled by "designer" selection.

Appearance

They have a strong chest, a flat back, a strong skeleton and very developed muscles. The constitution is a little thin, but it does not spoil them, but on the contrary gives a special grace. The weight of cats is 2-2.5 kg, cats are a little heavier - 3-4 kg.

Bobtail are born hunters, they run fast and deftly jump. Like all short-tailed ones, their hind legs are slightly longer than their forepaws, which is why a slight rise is formed in the region of the croup. The head is triangular in shape, the muzzle is well defined with expressive cheekbones and temples. The nose is long, a slight bend is barely noticeable in the nose. The eyes are large enough, oval in shape, set a little obliquely. The ears are long, but not huge, they are harmoniously combined with the proportions of the head, set wide apart and slightly tilted forward.

Unlike American bobtail or manks, the Japanese are not tailless cats. They kept the entire number of caudal vertebrae, only they are deformed, very short or bent. The tail of each cat is unique, it can be mobile or motionless, in size and shape should be in harmony with the appearance of the cat, but not exceed 7 cm in length.

Japanese bobtail can be long-haired or short-haired. The fur coat is pleasant to the touch, silky and smooth. Wools fit snugly to the body, only a little puff on the tail. It is desirable that the color of the coat is in harmony with the color of the eyes. Colors can be any, only lilac, abyssinian, chocolate and Siamese are not recognized. Long-haired bobtail boasts a fluffy collar, ponytail and panties.

Character

Japanese bobtail are incredible playful and energetic. Their level of activity, especially at a young age, can be compared with a small hurricane, only very neat. The cat will not sweep away everything in its path, it will deftly maneuver between obstacles. Bobtails are purposeful and unsurpassed hunters. Very sociable and curious, strongly attached to the family and the owner, near whom they try to spend a lot of time.

If you see that the animal is looking at you, believe me, this is not idle curiosity. Most likely, bobtail is learning. And do not be surprised if you meet a cat in a seemingly closed cabinet or in a washing machine. If you can’t find a pet for a long time, first of all check such difficult places. Most likely he is somewhere there.

A striking feature of the Japanese is their "talkativeness" and ability to reproduce a gamut of sounds, from ordinary meowing to twittering. The disadvantages of character include stubbornness and self-confidence. To teach Bobtail something, if he does not want it, the task is not easy, he decides where to go and where to climb.

Japanese Bobtail needs constant attention and an active life. A bored animal is a time bomb capable of destructive behavior.

Bobtail is a very intelligent animal. The pet quickly learns to adopt someone else's demeanor, most often in dogs. For example, they can start to bring things or walk on a leash. Their mind and curiosity are common causes of the trouble they bring them into. The Japanese bobtail has a good experience in penetrating into forbidden places and exiting enclosed spaces.

Maintenance and care

To ensure a pet a happy life, especially if it is kept in an apartment without access to the street, you will have to organize a whole training ground for games. It can be wood or cat furniture with houses. Ordinary mice or balls are quickly bored by these cats; they are better off acquiring interactive or logical games.

The owner of the Japanese bobtail should always be on guard because of the active temperament of the pet. A cat that catches up can easily jump out of the window, crash from the closet, and escape into the open door.

Japanese bobtail are very clean and take care of their fur coat on their own, so they bathe them in rare cases, usually before the show. During molting, the fallen hairs are cleaned daily with a brush or glove to speed up the process of changing a fur coat. The rest of the time you can comb out a pet only once a week. If necessary, clean eyes and ears.

Japanese bobtail has strong legs, equipped with sharp and powerful claws that need care. In most cases, animals deal with the problem of claws on their own, grinding them on a comfortable surface. But a routine inspection will not hurt in any case, because if the claws grow too much, they begin to bend to the pads on the legs, which hurts the animal when walking.

Diet

There are no special requirements for feeding Japanese bobtail. Ready-made feeds of a super-premium or premium class are selected for them, they contain only natural products and all the necessary vitamins and minerals. You can feed and natural food, the predominance of lean meat in the diet should be in a ratio of 2: 1. The main thing to remember is that a balanced diet is the key to good feline health and longevity.

Note! Japanese bobtail is an excellent hunter who, at the first opportunity, takes the opportunity to feast on a rodent or a feathered one. All experienced breeders know how many fatal infections can be on the body of a roaming rodent. Therefore, walking with a cat is best on a leash. In extreme cases, you can attach a collar with a bell to her neck.

Health

Japanese bobtails are strong and healthy cats with good immunity, they rarely get sick and have not found any genetic diseases, which hybrids are often prone to. Usually 3-4 kittens are born in the litter, the mortality rate among them is very low, babies begin to run before other breeds, are more active. Often among Japanese bobtail, there are long-livers who live up to 20 years.

Unlike most other breeds, the whining of these cats is not persistent screaming, but a riot and scandals. It is worth noting that the Bobtail mother is excellent. Usually a cat gives birth to 3-6 kittens. Most often, babies are strong, strong, well suck mother. Kids begin to leave their native nest early, sometimes already in the third week. For this reason, the Japanese bobtail breeder has to periodically look after the babies and help the cat raise offspring as much as possible.

How much is a japanese bobtail

The price of Japanese bobtail starts at 30,000 tons. Pricing is influenced by factors such as color, pedigree and other nuances. Buying this cat is an expensive pleasure, but people who sheltered the animal, basically do not regret it.

Bobtail belongs to the social breed of cats. He wants to be part of the family, needs a company, a vibrant life activity. He likes to walk and he is not at all against a leash and harness.
