Kitten Care Rules

In childhood, the foundation for good kitten health is laid. No mistakes can be made during this period of the baby’s life, because many of them cannot be fixed in the future. The owner should know how to feed the kitten, how to care for the future thunderstorm of mice and how to provide the baby with comfortable conditions for full development.

Newborn kittens

Basic care for newborn kittens is carried out by their mother. The cat not only feeds the babies, but also “bathes” them, licking its tongue. She helps children relieve themselves by massaging their tummy with their tongue. The cat uses the same massage to stimulate blood circulation and support the tiny muscles in tone. The owner should only observe the growth of the litter and regularly change the litter.
If the care of kittens from birth falls on the shoulders of the owner, his duties include feeding, massage to facilitate bowel movements and maintaining hygiene. Orphaned kittens are fed with a milk replacer from a special bottle. In extreme cases, they use a mixture prepared on their own: goat's milk, a couple of drops of vegetable oil, a drop of glucose, every three days a drop of multivitamins for newborn kittens. The first two weeks the babies are fed every three hours, then the number of nightly feedings is gradually reduced. Read more in the article "Proper feeding of kittens."
After feeding, kittens care is aimed at stimulating the intestines and urinary system. For the baby to pee, you need to gently massage the tummy using a slightly damp gauze swab. Then you should massage the anus in a circular motion so that the kitten can empty its intestines. Care for the small kitten for hygiene purposes is as follows: with a slightly damp gauze swab, we cleanse the muzzle of adhering milk, wipe the genitals and the anus. Repeat the procedure with a dry swab to remove excess moisture. During such a “bathing” it is important that the windows and doors are closed in the room: the kids need warmth and comfort.

Three to seven weeks

By the end of the third week, kittens begin to stand on their paws and learn to walk. If their mother feeds the babies, caring for the newborn kittens includes regular clipping of the claws (otherwise the babies will scratch their nipples badly). If the owner didn’t care about the kitten’s manicure before, then it’s time to teach the kids the procedure: the kitten is on its feet, now it can hurt itself by clutching its litter with its claw. Only the very tip of the claw needs to be cut, trying not to touch the blood vessels.
It's time to decide what to feed the kitten. If you have selected ready-made food, you need to diversify the milk menu with canned food for feeding. If preference is given to natural products, low-fat chicken, rabbit or lamb, quail eggs, and children's cheese without dyes are added to the diet. In addition, it is time to conduct the first deworming, giving the baby a remedy for worms for kittens.
After the introduction of complementary foods, the cat-mother ceases to remove excrement. Now kitten care includes teaching the babies to the tray. Capacity for toilet cases should be a suitable size and with low sides. The filler is preferably one on the packaging of which it is said: "safe to swallow." The tray needs to be put not far from the berth in order to have time to take the kitten there, which begins to “fit in”. Even small kittens are cleanliness, so in the vast majority of cases, it’s enough just a couple of times to show the baby where to go when certain urges arise.

One month

Kitten care 1 month: cleaning the ears, rinsing the eyes and monitoring the condition of the oral cavity. Recently opened ears must be inspected daily. If there is an excessive accumulation of sulfur, you need to remove it with a wet swab. Do not overdo it! It is not necessary to achieve sterility, because a small amount of sulfur protects the ears from litter and wool. Kitten eye care should be regular, but also not excessive. The eyes are wiped with a gauze swab dipped in special drops or boiled water.
Caring for a kitten for 1 month can be very difficult, because at this age, growing predators have teeth: kittens are capricious, do not allow touching their faces, some babies eat poorly. However, the oral cavity still needs to be examined in order to notice signs of possible inflammation in time. If the gums become very red and swollen, the veterinarian will recommend a special gel that relieves pain.
Inadequate care for a monthly kitten can lead to serious consequences. The baby should be kept warm and clean. One should not enter the room in street clothes, and before communicating with the baby, one must wash his hands.

Two months

The kid has grown stronger, has grown up, plays a lot and shows curiosity. Now the kitten is happy to explore everything in its path, tasting slippers, forgotten socks and even a corner of the carpet. Innocent fun plays an important role in the development of the baby, but curiosity increases the risk of contracting infectious diseases. For this reason, kitten care for 2 months necessarily includes vaccination with a complex vaccine. For ten days - deworming means for kittens. After three weeks, during which it is important to comply with quarantine, revaccination is carried out. By the way, it’s time to switch to kitten food or add vegetables, fish and cereals to the meat, eggs and cottage cheese if the kitten eats natural products.
Caring for a small kitten at the age of two months is no different from caring for adult animals. In addition to the already familiar hygiene procedures, it is time to introduce the baby to the comb. The fur coat needs to be combed out every day for at least three minutes, even if there is nothing to comb out so far. Particular attention should be paid to this procedure if the kitten is long-haired - having become accustomed to brushing since childhood, the pet will not cause problems in the future.
Careful care of the kitten for 2 months is necessary if the owner plans to grow a star of exhibitions. At this age, the baby should calmly endure all the manipulations, endlessly trusting the person. After vaccination quarantine, it's time to introduce the kitten to strangers, gradually socializing it in society.

Three months

Some cats already at the age of five months start asking for a cat, and some cats from four to six months old are able to fertilize females. Therefore, you should not take a three-month-old kitten as an absurdity - he already understands everything and must know the boundaries of what is permitted, indicated without shouting and violence. Caring for a kitten for 3 months, in addition to the above manipulations, includes ... swimming! Yes, yes, it's time, no matter how much the owner wants to delay this moment. The first bath forms an attitude towards water, which will remain for a lifetime, so you need to act through love and persuasion, avoiding coercion. You can bathe your baby only a month after revaccination and before the start of the tooth change. During the change of teeth, water procedures are undesirable, since at this time the immunity works like a slave on galleys - you do not need to overload it. The kitten should dry in a warm room, in which there is no shadow of a draft.
Observing the simple rules of caring for a kitten, the owner helps the baby grow healthy, active and happy. The best assistant to the novice owner is the responsible veterinarian who needs to be called if there is any suspicion of malaise.
